CDC recently updated some of our testing guidance to reflect updated recommendations as to who should be tested. These updated guidelines, formulated through the White House Task Force, received appropriate attention, consultation and input from task force experts.

Today’s MMWR, which highlights the thoughtful and prudent public health practices used during overnight summer camps in Maine, reinforces how powerful everyday preventive actions are in reducing and keeping COVID-19 transmission low. Despite more than 1,000 campers and staff from nearly every state and 7 countries, only three people tested positive for COVID-19 during the camp and no additional campers or staff were known to be infected.

CDC data show disproportionate COVID-19 impact in American Indian/Alaska Native populations

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released a new study that specifically examines how COVID-19 is affecting American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN) – one of the racial and ethnic minority groups at highest risk from the disease. CDC found that in 23 selected states, the cumulative incidence of laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 cases among AI/AN was 3.5 times that of non-Hispanic whites.

CDC Expects 2020 Outbreak of Life-Threatening Acute Flaccid Myelitis

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) anticipates that 2020 will be another peak year for cases of acute flaccid myelitis (AFM), an uncommon but serious neurologic condition that affects mostly children. The disease has peaked every two years between August and November in the United States since 2014.  Enteroviruses, particularly enterovirus-D68 (EV-D68), are likely responsible for these peaks in cases.
